A Passkey is a digital credential that allows users to authenticate themselves without entering passwords or card details.
It is part of the Click to Pay system, which is an e-commerce guest-checkout solution based on EMVCo Secure Remote Commerce specifications.
When using Click to Pay, enrolled cards are displayed and available for use during checkout.
Passkeys replace manual card entry and are tokenised and embedded within the merchant’s shopping experience,
providing faster and more secure checkouts.
13. If a device enrolled for Passkey authentication is stolen, how can authentication be deactivated?
Click to Pay requires biometric authentication for each transaction, ensuring only the device owner can use the passkeys.
14. Does Visa enforce step-up authentication for high-risk transactions?
Yes. Click to Pay uses a robust fraud engine that monitors factors such as transaction velocity, amount, IP address, failed attempts and OTP generation. Based on risk, the system may request additional verification, such as asking for the CVV2 before completing the transaction.
15. Does Visa flag high-suspicion devices to prevent tokenising multiple cards?
Click to Pay functions as a token requestor and uses the security of network tokenisation. When a device is registered for Passkeys, Visa can pass device-related information to Ahli Bank Qatar through Visa Token Services messages.
16. How does 3DS authentication work for Click to Pay on merchant websites?
Click to Pay enrolment and FIDO Passkey enrolment can occur during merchant checkout. After a successful 3DS challenge, the device is enrolled for Passkeys. Future transactions on Click to Pay-enabled merchants will then use biometric authentication. If biometrics fail or passkeys are removed, the system falls back to 3DS.
17. Does Click to Pay use OTPs for authentication?
Unrecognised device:
When accessing Click to Pay on an unrecognised device, an OTP is required before card information is shown.
The OTP is sent directly by Visa.
First transaction:
Before using a Click to Pay-registered card for the first time on a device, a successful 3DS authentication is required.
If the device does not support biometrics or if biometrics fail, 3DS OTP authentication will be used.
18. Where is the tokenised card data stored?
Tokenised card data is stored in a token vault within the Visa Token Services solution. This is the same vault used for Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay. It is part of VisaNet, Visa’s core processing network.
19. If a card is cancelled from Click to Pay, is the token data removed?
20. Can a cardholder add a card on more than one smart device?
Yes.
Once a card is enrolled, it is stored in the cardholder’s profile in the cloud.
The cardholder can access their Click to Pay-enabled cards on multiple devices after passing the required authentication.
